Onlay

A restoration that replaces a cusp or cusps of a tooth. Onlays (also referred to as partial crowns) are placed on top of the tooth and help build it up. Onlays are preferred by cosmetic dentists as they can help strengthen a tooth more than a standard amalgam filling. Onlays can be made of multiple materials including gold, porcelain and tooth-coloured composite resin. While porcelain inlays are more aesthetically pleasing they tend to be more brittle than gold.
