Gingivitis

Refers to the inflammation of gingival tissues without the loss of connective tissue. Gingivitis is just one of many periodontal diseases (or diseases of the tissues that surround the teeth such as the gums, soft tissues and bone) and is classified in stages. The first stage is mild gingivitis and can potentially move on to severe periodontitis and finally, acute necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis. If left untreated, this last form of gingivitis can be life threatening.
