Gingiva

Soft tissues that overly the crowns of unerupted teeth and encircle the necks of erupted teeth. Gingiva play an important role in anchoring the teeth and shaping one's mouth. If a patient's gums are ravaged to Periodontal Disease or Gum Disease, the gingiva may start to recede causing the exposure of tooth roots. In severe cases, a dentist will use Cosmetic Gum Grafting to fill in the areas of loss (also known as a Free Soft Tissue Graft). While some patients may dislike how the receded gingiva affects their smile, it can also cause severe discomfort when the nerves are exposed to hot and cold. Healthy gingiva is pink in color and not easily moved when poked with a toothbrush.
